DACA is Ending. Here is What You Need to Know.

The Trump Administration announced yesterday that it is ending DACA by March 5, 2018.  Immigration Counseling Service (ICS), Oregon’s oldest nonprofit law firm representing immigrants, victims of human trafficking and unaccompanied minors since 1978, remains committed to supporting our immigrant community members and ensuring access to justice for all immigrants.

It has the support of the President, although indications are that it has limited support in Congress. How did we get here?

On January 27, 2017 President Trump issued his first travel ban excluding people from seven Muslim-majority countries via executive order which was blocked by several courts around the United States. USCIS announces renewal and re-authorization of Temporary Protected Status for Syria

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that Syrians with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) can renew their status and work authorization between now and September 30, 2016.  

USCIS also re-authorized Syrian TPS to allow for first-time applicants to request TPS.  Individuals from Syria who do not currently have TPS are encouraged to request a consultation to find out of they qualify for protection under this process.

Appeals court decides against DAPA and Expanded DACA programs

ICS is delighted to announce that Robin Castro has joined ICS as its newest Board member.  Robin’s heritage is Mexican but as an Air Force kid, he lived in England and Japan. Federal judge in Texas orders temporary suspension of Obama’s executive actions on immigration

Today in Texas a federal judge ordered the temporary suspension of Obama’s executive actions on immigration.

The decision will halt for the time being the implementation of expanded DACA (previously planned for tomorrow, February 18).  Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), which was to be implemented in the middle of May, could also be delayed if the case is not resolved before then.

Amid all the excitement surrouding President Obama's announcements this week regarding the expansion of benefits for certain immigrants, notarios and other unlicensed practitioners will also expand their efforts to take advantage of people.  To protect yourself from fraud, ICS recommends that you remember the following facts.  When in doubt, get a second opinion from an AILA attorney or a BIA Accredited Representative.

ICS joins the Mobile Mexican Consulate in Cornelius -- Saturday, April 12, 2014

The Consulate of Mexico in Portland has invited ICS to its Mobile Consulate on Saturday April 12, 2014.  Events begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Cultural Center of Washington County, located at 1110 N Adair St Cornelius, OR 97113.

ICS representatives will join the Washington County Sherrif and representatives from the consualte in discussing relief for survivors of domestic violence and other serious crimes.

ICS and partners awarded Oregon Community Foundation grant for DACA outreach

ICS is the proud beneficiary of a grant from the Oregon Community Foundation to expand outreach services to eligible DACA applicants who live outside the Portland metro area.  In partnership with Sponsors Organizing to Assist Refugees (SOAR) and Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services, ICS will use the grant to conduct free information sessions and screenings for young people in Washington, ...
